Who Creates and Maintains Top Academic profiles

Wayne Bucklar operates www.topacademic.org which aims to provide a free web page (internet profile) to every academic.

Yours may have been auto created based on information about you that has been copied from the internet. If so, it is incomplete and may well be out of date or even inaccurate. I would like you to update and maintain it.

Why TopAcademic?

Until late in 2005, I was a lecturer in the MBA program at QUT in Australia teaching information economy.

Like you, the university had information about me published on their web site which was accessed by potential students and others (perhaps even academic head hunters). From time to time, the university wanted me to provide updated information.

As the university went though various stages of accreditation and for other reasons, the requests for updated information got more and more frequent and I spent more and more time finding and formatting information.

When I resigned, my “web presence” (understandably) disappeared. I was no longer a staff member and the institution simple deleted my information.

I didn’t move to another institution, but I assume if I had, I would have had to go through the whole process of recreating the information for the new institution.

Now that I am not working in an academic institution, I would also be virtually invisible to academic recruiters.

Thus was born the concept of Topacademic.

Who is entitled to a Top Academic profile

My aim is to provide an online profile for every academic. This is an ambitious aim but the internet facilitates such ambitious projects.

It is designed to:
• Be independent of the institution for which you work,
• Be easy for you to maintain without special software,
• Provide good “payback” for the time and effort it takes you to create and maintain, and
• Be free to use.
Many profiles have been created automatically from information already published by institutions.  The criteria for eligibility is that you have an institutional email address or other evidence that you are a bonafide academic who is not working in an institution at the moment.

Students are not eligible.

If there is already a profile in your name

If there is already a profile in your name, it has been created automatically from information published on the web by others and you can maintain it using a username and password available on request by emailing wayne@topacademic.org.  Your password will only be sent to your institutional email address.

If you would like a profile in your name

Click here to create a profile for yourself or your colleagues.

Your password will only be sent to your institutional email address.

If you would like to suggest a profile for some one else

You can create a profile for your colleagues here. Their password will only be sent to their institutional email address.

Getting a username and password to maintain your profile

The username for each profile is the institutional email address with which the profile was established.  Passwords are only sent to this address as this is the cornerstone of out validation and security system. Once established, other email addresses can be used.

If you have forgotten your username and password

Your username and password is available on request by emailing your name and institution to wayne@topacademic.org.  Your password will only be sent to your institutional email address.
